Upgrades 39. Headset, Intercom, Music and Two Way Radio

Moving on from the previous post about the headset and intercom, I finally got around to hooking up a two way radio to the system, this completes the headset so it does everything I wanted. For this, a local group near me all use the Licensed Mitex General radio, so I decided to join them as a 446 unlicensed radio would not work with theirs.

For bluetooth communication with my headset I needed to order the special Bluetooth adapter to fit it. Mitex is based on a Kenwood, and so you need a 11.5mm adapter for this. I chose a herda one as they have good reviews and seem to have different versions depending on which radio you have.

This is what I bought to extend the system:

Pairing

Turning on and off the unit:
Press and hold the Media and Mobile button on the cardo together for about 2-3 seconds.

Pairing cardo with phone:
Turn on the cardo unit, press and hold the mobile button for 5 seconds, it will say "mobile phone pairing" (if not press the button again to change to GPS/mobile etc), the unit flashes red and blue. Put phone into pairing mode too. (pin will be 0000)

Pairing cardo with walkie talker adapter:
Turn on the cardo unit, press and hold the mobile button for 5 seconds, it will say "mobile phone pairing", roll the wheel until you hear "2nd phone pairing", you may have to tap the phone button once more. Then on the walkie talkie adapter, press and hold the button for 7 seconds (when the walkie talkie unit is off), it will flash red and blue to indicate pairing.

Pairing walkie talker adapter with PTT button:
On the walkie talkie adapter, press and hold the button for 7 seconds (when the walkie talkie unit is off), then press the PTT button to pair it

Required Cardo app setting
Open the app and goto audio settings, then advanced, and enable the two way Bluetooth option (this ensures that media will resume playing after walkie talkie comms).

Intercom

Pairing Intercom (if lost):
Press the intercom button on one device for 5 seconds, the unit will flash red and say "Rider A pairing", do the same on the other device.

Stop/Start Intercom:
Press the intercom button once on both devices to start the in built intercom, press it twice on one device to end it.

Media sharing from one device:
For this to work you need something like an android device that supports multiple Bluetooth out and make sure both devices are paired to the same phone. This works for the S22 that I run, and is here so I don't forget it between uses. Start playing some music with both devices switched on, then pull down the notification bar at the top twice to get the advanced pull down menu. In the case of spotify or the radio app you can then select "media output" and then choose to output on both cardo devices at the same time. This will then allow you to use the intercom and share music at the same time.

N.B. do not use the built in Cardo media sharing as it will not work with the intercom on at the same time.

Media

Next Track:
Press the media button once.

Prev Track:
Press the media button twice.

Stop Media:
Press the wheel in.

Cardo volume setup:
To get the best setup, I ended up settling on the values shown in the screen shots, I use the volume wheel or phone to change the master volume but it relies on the cardo app being setup properly too.

  • Background Volume - This I have set at 40%, This is the mix between the intercom volume and the music when no one is talking
  • Audio mixing level - Also set at 25%, this is how much to lower the music volume when someone talks, otherwise you cannot hear them.
